About a year ago, the youth group began tossing around the idea of going on a mission trip in the summer of 2014. That idea became a reality later that Fall as 17 young women and men from Trinity Peace Lutheran Parish and The Hixton-Northfield Lutheran Parish registered to make the journey from Taylor, WI to Kansas City, MO. After months of planning and fundraising, we finally set off on our drive to KC after gathering for a service of sending at Taylor Lutheran on July 20th. With God's blessing and everyone's prayers, we drove for eight hours to get to Immanuel Lutheran Church in Kansas City, MO.
"A life lived in service..."
Our theme for the week was to find ways in which we DEMO Jesus' love and service to his disciples to other people we would meet in Kansas City. Demonstrating that love in service took the form of reading with elementary students who have been having a difficult time with reading in school, being hands and feet in community Gardens and Urban Farms, helping Harvesters Food Bank to feed 66,000 people in 27 counties surrounding the Kansas City area, caring for elderly in a nursing home, and helping an organization that serves and educates refugees from other countries. Joining us in this work were youth from all over the country - California, Iowa, Illinois, Nebraska, Minnesota, and New England. The Youthworks staff we partnered with were amazing the whole week long. We started to see how we could indeed serve others the way that we see Jesus serving others in his life.
Dancing, Music, Culture and Fun!
We had so many opportunities to also have some fun together. As much as we may have been tired by the end of our work day, we seemed to always have the energy to play never ending games of four square. However, we also had the opportunity to go swimming, go on scavenger hunts, and even do some Scandinavian Dancing! We also made the time to visit the College Basketball Experience, the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, the American Jazz Museum, the Negro Leagues Baseball Hall of Fame, eat Arthur Bryant's BBQ, catch come late night jazz at the Blue Room, go to a Kansas City Royals game, and even get some shopping in on the Country Club Plaza.
Thank you so much to everyone who helped make this trip a reality. Thank you to the gracious people of Kansas City for changing us for the better. Thank you to Tony for being amazing the whole time on the trip. Thank you to the parents for entrusting us with their children. And Thanks be to God for giving us the opportunity to DEMO Christ's love to the world.
